Typography: Displaying Digital Fonts

I've always thought of typography as an interesting subject as far as design goes. Be it because I was struggling with understanding it, be it because I became really fond of it once I understood it, kinda like Adobe Illustrator. Thus I'm always on the look-out for ways in how people relate and discuss typography.
I've read a very interesting article today, concerning displaying digital fonts. What's interesting about it, is it explains the process of digital font rendering in a very creative way. It probably wouldn't have appealed as much to me, if the basis of the article wasn't a comparison between the digital font display process and Plato's Analogy of the Cave.
Since I'm not shy at all about my knowledge in philosophy, moreover ancient philosophy, I decided to check out if Atilla Korap would make any sense out of this. Surprisingly he did, the comparison works, and even has deph to it. It's a well written article where the complex information can be understood in a simple manner by relating to Plato's allegory.
As for the article's information so far, it being a five part out of which only two are out, It's very well done. We understand how fonts are interpreted by computers, why anti-aliasing makes them look different, why Adobe Illustrator has Type orientated optimization and Art orientated optimization, why when you zoom in Photoshop, type faces that aren't vector look like block puzzles and why Adobe products will always render type faces the same way, regardless of operating system. Of course most of those things aren't actually said, but it's really not that hard to connect the dots. Overall it was a fun and interesting article to read.
If you're into typography or just want to learn more about how digital fonts work the way they do, I'd say give it a go. Also if you're a web designer, you should totally check it out, since it's very relevant to low resolution interpretation of fonts, which has always been a tricky issue for web design.

Case study: MIT Media Lab logo

Now this is an active logo I can live with. Unlike somewhat poor attempts I've seen as of late, this one actually makes sense. It's simple appealing, optimistic. I wouldn't go as for as to call it experimental, since it's been done before, and active logos aren't much of a big deal anymore, or shouldn't be at least. Still I can see how the experimental thing can help their positioning, as well as the fact that the movements were done by algorithm. However I must point out that Richard The and E Roon Kang did a very good job, I don't really go for the quantity thing, if I don't see a proportional quality to it. This is definitely proportional in the Q&Q. The 40.000 permutations number says a lot in this case.

This is actually a much older artwork, that I've had hanging round. Most of it was beyond help, however I could extract the main shape and try some experiments with it. I like how the color turned out, the interesting thing is that the colors we see in it aren't actually homogeneous, but artefacts of the texture.

This artwork is very important to me, it goes in the "something I had to get out of my system" category, in the sense that with it I've confirmed for myself that I can handle making high quality shapes, not to say that I didn't think I could in the first place, but it's better to get all doubts off my mind, so when I have something important to do I can go all out.

This is a demo I did for BrandUP. This layout was a real eye opener, it really made me curious about social media marketing and how web design works in general. This is a web mockup I did before getting my licentiate's degree in online communication by web design, thus some elements might not be exactly accurate to my current standards, in that the approach should've been more easy to relate to.

Orange Crush is a brand I did for ICON Advertising, it was a good experience, it was done when I didn't have much know-how about design principles. Now that I look at it the copy font is just ewwww and the Orange font seems unsatisfactory as well. Guess that proves I've grown if a bit. The bottle mockup in Cinema 4D was ok I guess. I really must learn how to do 3D liquid better, hopefully my PC won't have a heart attack from it. The part I'm most happy with in this is the product design.

Hello everyone! I know it's been a while, okay it's been a long time since I posted. This is due to me being away from the creative industry for a while, I need to finish up my final paper for the University and it's a real drag.

I must confess that this post wouldn't have existed if the folowing would not have happened to me:

Earlier tonight I was discussing with a good friend the possibility of entering Design University (part of why I'm so eager to get my current Communications University over with is because of that, It's been fun, I loved it, I will use it, but art in what I want to reach out to) With that came a link from him to me, to a certain Iain Macarthur's portfolio that pumped him up even more in doing art study. The momment I clicked it was as if a part of my thoughts and ideas were cut out and slapped on screen, and I'm not talking of the kind of ideas that I currently bring out in my works, but of the "to the core" ones that I've always wanted to see with my own eyes but never had the skill to pull off. I just had to write about his art. It's kind of like dreaming of a wonderful woman, and when you wake up you have a date with her.

Macarthur's art it what I would call a fusion of many things. The ideas themselves are of a reality corrupted by imagination. The fact that most of them are graycale and some have a two color variation adds to the feeling.

It feels like a good mixture of realistic subjects and abstract shapes. Between splatters, swirls and drops each artwork gives a different vibe. Although some patterns are frequently used, the portraits bring the unique out every time.

To me Iain Macarthur is not so much inspiration as he is a goal.

If there is a way to show the depths of the human mind while still keeping a sense of realism, I'm sure Macarthur found it, and I aim to find it for myself, on my own path.

Strider cliffs

This is a collab I did with a very close friend Alexandru Ilies. The original artwork is his, color work is done by me.
This artwork was of great insight. A few days ago I was inspired by Chris Scalf to do a general to specific aproach in coloring.
As I progressed some color tweakings were necessary. I really liked how the highlights worked on the strider, giving it a more organic feel. It could have been much better but I think it looks good even as it is. I also feel I could've done a better job on the eye. Still I acomplished the two things I set out to do:
1. Proove Alex's works can reach a pretty good visual level given some tweaks
2. Find out for myself if Chris's workflow is good for me, and yea it really works fine. Still I can't shake the feeling that I will have to customise it sooner or later
Work time was really fast on it (about half an hour) surprisingly it doesn't feel that rushed. In the future I want to try this color workflow on a vector lineart, we'll see how that works out.

Case Study: Black Widow by Bruno Wagner

The thing you have to appreciate about this artwork the most is its feel. The colors are very well picked. The blue hair accents are great in that they balance out the composition quite good with the help of the dark reds as opposed to the orange-yellow combo. The blurred effects in the top right corner are a good touch but I would've liked if the blur effect happened else ware as well, because it's too isolated this way, it gives an unbalanced feel.
However color isn't the only aspect contributing to the feel, the widow's expression is flawless; it delivers according to its title. An empty, almost soulless gaze of sadness.
The painting style is also something to be inspired by, taking into account this is Photoshop we're talking about, a paint-like background is quite the task to achieve.
An element one mustn't forget cu notice is the black widow spider in the bottom right corner. This adds a great touch to the artwork, analogy to the animal kingdom giving it a bit of "wild" to go with the hairstyle. In conclusion it's my opinion that Bruno Wagner did a smashing job with this illustration. It stirs up an emotion and delivers according to it.

Case Study: Victoria by Joonas Sairiala

The first time I saw this artwork, I felt like it was something amazing, I was immediately drawn to the sharpness of the face and of the feet, this gives to a wonderful composition, in the sense that you notice the start and end of the main element, the figure, fact that by consequence makes the entire figure pop up. I really like the blur parts of it; it gives it a great organic feel. The type on it adds a great plus to everything, the design of it is simple and appealing, but I think it would've worked even better of the line width wasn't that big and if the lines themselves were set a bit more to the left, away from the figure, it would have drawn focus better.
What I don't like about it is the background. It just leaves me with a bad taste like "what a shame". The checkerboards are good but it gives me the impression that somewhere along the way opacity was drawn out, it could be a visual illusion but I have the feeling that the edges don't stand out as much as they should. The bottom left and upper right spheres are good, but the bottom right sphere should've been a bit smaller, space should be speculated wherever it can be. The other thing I don't like is the Earth on the left side, the fade on it is not working so well, also the softness of it sets it apart in a bad way from the entire artwork, a higher contrast on it could have maybe solved a certain percentage of the problem.
All in all, it's a great inspirational artwork that works on the boundaries of 2D vector and 3D organic.

Dangerous Davoli

This is something I did for a very good friend. Initially I wanted to do the entire vectoring myself, but I was pressed on by time so I used a few external resources ( Including GoMedia Arsenal ) to fit with what I had in mind. I'm quite proud of the typo in this one, it has exactly the feel I pictured to it. The most difficult part in the artwork was the "Dangerous" text, but I think it was well worth it. I am a little unpleased that, while I did separate the hair line and the hair shade line, the separation is barely noticeable, from the get go I wanted it to be subtile but not noticeable (guess that will teach me to zoom out once in a while)
One thing I'm particulary happy about, is that thanks to this artwork is that I finally understood how to fully operate Illustrator's pathfinder (and by this I mean the Alt+Click to apply the pathfinder rule to a entire group, long live mouse hover pop-up hints) All that being said, enjoy!

When I saw this I was starstruck, this would solve so many problems that the current smartphones have. For one thing a 6.5 inch screen is amazing. I remember the hard time I had with HTC phones, with this you can handle anything on your phone properly

Although I am a bit worried by how fragile the folding screen would be. The phone also will have three solar batteries. Everything about this concept makes me feel like soon the way we interact with smartphones will change, the idea of more screen real estate and yet maximum flexibility is the missing link. (or was should I say)

Books: Moonshine: DreamWorks Artists...After Dark!

I must say, I'm not a fan of Dreamworks in what concerns their stories, or animation originality. However I can't say the same about the actual art. If in animation I prefer Pixar, in artworks, Dreamworks doesn't do so bad to me. In fact, it does quite well, the art feels very appealing whether it's cartoon, sketch, or realistic looking, the art is very emotional and well made. This leaves me with one conclusion: at Dreamworks, the animators can't seem to bring out the best in the work of the character designers.

If there are some fortunate cases like Shrek, that really gets you going, the other Dreamworks products are indeed entertaining but they don't stick. I know I've seen a lot of Dreamworks movies, but I can only remember a few of them as something that I would find noteworthy. As for the artbook itself we can checkout some starting points as seen on CartoonBrew

A few years ago, a group of DreamWorks artists banded together to create Scrambled Ink, an indie comic anthology that was eventually published by Dark Horse Comics. This summer, DreamWorks is releasing Moonshine: Brewed on the Dark Side of the DreamWorks Moon, which marks the first time that an animation studio has officially sanctioned an ‘art of’ book featuring the personal work of its artists.

The authors themselves state on the Moonshine Blog that:

DreamWorks’ first personal art publication, Moonshine, was conceived as an opportunity to highlight the breath of artistic development talent at the studio. The Artistic Development department championed the project and partnered with Production Designer, Christophe Lautrette and Art Director, Pierre-Olivier Vincent to co-edit the book. The studio’s educational partnership with Scott Robertson, chair of Entertainment Design at Art Center and owner of Design Studio Press let to a natural selection of Scott’s company to publish the compilation of works. The team wanted the book to be accessible to students and treated like a annual publication. The plan is to publish additional volumes.

The fact that they plan to release other volumes is a great thing because Moonshine can become a great inspiration source for young Illustrators and concept artists, as a level of artwork that they should achieve or should try out.

This is a small format I'm particullary fond of because it's the first small format I've done since I gained some valuable design insight.
It was kind of a bother to shuffle between Photoshop and Illustrator, but in the end it all worked out for the best, this is also the first small format on which I'm using Illustrator (thank God for artboards)

As for the concept, not much to it, it was just something random, for me it's very important that no matter how much I improve, to keep an eye for old workflows, many times I've found that getting rid of old workflows is less productive than taking the time to improve them as well with what you learn. Anyway, enjoy everyone. Also a big thanks to Quoenusz for the C4D renders.

Acum ceva timp am facut un articol despre un software care părea foarte reușit, anume Illuststudio. Iată că a trecut timpul iar programul a mai ieșit puțin la suprafață. Aflăm că este distribuit de CELSYS originalii creatori a Manga Studio (actualmente Comic Studio) și una din firmele cele mai influente din Japonia în producerea de software pentru animeuri, incluse in suita RETAS!PRO.

Recunosc că nu am avut prea mult timp să mă familiarizez cu programul dar până acum mi se pare decent (nu grozav cum părea) Photoshop-ul Japonez cum e numit de mulți.
De nontat că a apărut și un patch în engleză (neoficial ce-i drept) care își face treaba destul de bine.
Depinde cu ce workflow ești obișnuit, nu văd nici un punct pentru care nu aș recomanda Illuststudio, însă nici nu văd un feature care să îl facă indispensabil. E mai mult vorba de economie națională, „de ce să cumpărăm software de la americani când putem să concepem noi soft.”

Posibil să credeţi că am înebunit cu firele de lumină, întradevăr tehnica e supra utilizată, fapt pentru care bannerul a căpătat reacţie negativă de la unii, povitivă de la alţii, mă mulţumesc în a spune că, folosesc tehnica acolo unde consider 100% că e benefic, dacă restul o folosesc în ignoranţă când le vine pe bujie not my problem.

De mai mult timp vreau să public artwork-ul acesta. Momentan e unicat prin faptul că e singurul artwork care l-am facut în două tranşe. La un moment dat credeam că am depăşit recordul de layere (101) dar m-am înşelat am facut numai 75.
Cat despre concept, iniţial vroiam să numesc lucrarea "This is Fake" în sensul că natura care o avem acum nu mai e pură, dar m-am gândit să nu aducă diverse aluzii nedorite.
Schimband titlul am schimbat şi conceptul.

Acesta o sa fie probabil cel mai bun program de desenat vreodata conceput de om. illustStudio seamana cu Sai Paint Tool (pe langa faptul ca e facut tot de japonezi) acessibilitatea tool-urilor si rotate canvas. Din perspectiva lui Manga Studio ia autocorectarea liniei ceea ce e probabil cel mai genial lucru intrun program de grafica, iar de la Photoshop CS4 Implementarea functiilor 3D. Diferenta e ca illustStudio le-a implementat bine, Photoshop CS4 le-a implementat execrabil.

Programul inca nu are versiune in engleza, dar s-a anuntat ca va aparea.
De asemenea programul are ca arie de distributie numai japonia. Puteti sa descarcati trial dar trebuie sa umblati la Windows ca sa accepte caractere japoneze

Tutorial realizat in Photoshop CS3 si Comic Studio EX3 cunoscut si drept Manga Studio Nu l-am realizat eu, doar l-am gasit in timp ce cautam tutoriale pentru Paint Tool Sai. Imi place ca tipul face umbrele pe masca, sa stii o treaba, e interesant de vizionat. Imi aminteste de inca un filmulet cu "Incredible photoshop artist" care din pacate vad ca nu mai e hostat

Aici am incercat ceva nou, ceva mai simplu dat totodata atragator, am avut ceva probleme la culoare, pe care le-am remediat cu vreo 3 layere inainte de final. Ce mi-a placut mult la el a fost tema chinezeasca de dragoni. Pacat ca au iesit cam blured firele alea dar guess that's ok, daca erau mai sharpened (trust me you wouldn't wanna see that)
